Columbia Engineering was responsible for the civil site design for multiple projects at the existing 46.72 acre Duluth High School campus. Said projects included a new four-story classroom building with associated parking, courtyard expansion, temporary/overflow parking and a new tennis court facility.
The new four-story classroom building with its associated parking and courtyard expansion proved to be a challenging design due to the constraints of the existing site. The new classroom building was to be located in an area of the site that had an existing maintenance building and had previously been utilized as a location for mobile classrooms and a practice football field. Located between the existing classroom building and the proposed classroom building was an existing access road which also served as a major utility corridor for the entire existing site. The access drive was closed and redeveloped in order to expand the existing courtyard and to create an outdoor amphitheater. Columbia Engineering also utilized this opportunity to realign the school’s existing utilities and consolidate the redundant service lines without jeopardizing the utility services being provided to existing buildings.

Columbia Engineering performed land planning and the civil site engineering design for a temporary/overflow parking facility. After several years of use of the temporary parking facility, Columbia Engineering performed land planning and the civil site design to convert the existing parking facility to a tennis facility with four (4) tennis courts, spectator seating area and associated parking.
